Baseline assessment is the process of evaluating a student’s current level of knowledge or performance in a given subject or area. It is used to establish a baseline to measure future performance against. Baseline assessments are conducted at the beginning of a school year, after a student has transferred to a new school, or when a student is first being introduced to a new subject or concept. Types of Baseline Assessment:
1. Academic: This type of assessment is used to measure a student’s current academic knowledge and skills, such as reading, writing, and mathematics.
2. Social-Emotional: Assessment which evaluates the social-emotional functioning of a student. It is used to identify any issues that are impacting the student’s behavior and performance.
3. Physical: Type of assessment which is used to evaluate a student’s physical health and fitness level e.g. strength, flexibility, and balance.
4. Motor: This assessment is used to measure a student’s ability to complete a variety of physical and motor tasks i.e. fine and gross motor skills.
5. Cognitive: Is used to evaluate a student’s cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving and memory. e.g. short-term memory, long-term memory, and executive functioning.
Grade 7 Baseline Assessment With Examples:
Baseline assessment for Grade 7 covers reading, writing, mathematics, and science skills.
Reading: A passage or story with MCQs that assess the student’s understanding of the material, or a cloze passage (assesses vocabulary and comprehension).
Writing: A prompt asking the student to write a persuasive essay, or to write a descriptive narrative. Assess the student’s grammar, spelling, and overall writing structure.
Mathematics: Include a various types of questions ranging from basic operations to more complex equations (algebraic concepts such as graphing and solving equations).
Science: Questions on a topics, such as physical science, life science, and earth science (scientific method, scientific terminology, and the application of scientific principles).
Grade 8:
- Tests in core subject such as math, reading, and writing
- Measure performance in comparison to the grade level expectations
- Include standardized tests such as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) or the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT)
- Math assessment that evaluates a student’s understanding of basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry
